Reducing Measure
Woe to those who give less [than due],
Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full.
But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.
Do they not think that they will be resurrected
For a tremendous Day –
The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds? [Al Mutafifeen:1-6] In the very first verse, a curse is being put upon those who give to people less then what is due. This is very frightening; we must ensure that we always give to those around us exactly what they deserve. For instance, if you owe a person change then you should return the exact amount, not even reducing a cent. Also people who give others food in the store should not use faulty weighing machines so that people take less grocery assuming it to be more. Sometimes a person feels that if they subtract something just slightly, their own items will increase. But ultimately the punishment that waits in the hereafter is far worse and ever increasing.
