Severe Crime, Severe Punishment

The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse – lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion of Allāh, if you should believe in Allāh and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment. [An Nur:2]
Upon reading this verse the first thing that clicks in a persons mind is how severe this punishment is. However, we also have to look at the nature of the crime and who is involved and affected by it. Fornication is the cause of many ills in society. Due to this promiscuous lifestyle there are now many single parent families, diseases, young families and physical and emotional downfalls. Below are some of the reasons:

• Fornication affects not only the couple involved but also the society at large. If there is a child present they will have lasting psychological problems. Many single parent families are headed by women who play the role of both parents.
• Recent studies have shown that children who are bought with only a mother are likely to also have many partners and become pregnant at a young age. This clearly indicates that people who are fornicating are creating ills not only for themselves but the rest of society.
• Many women are left abandoned and go into phases of depression due to feeling lonely and extremely vulnerable. It seems many people are ready to take the step to having sexual intercourse but do not want the responsibility of having a child. This also leads to abortion.
• Fornication also leads to a high of sexual desires in society and consequently has made an increase in the amount of rape in society.
