A Misquoted Verse

Student of Al Huda
Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allāh has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband’s] absence what Allāh would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allāh is ever Exalted and Grand. [An Nisa:34]
This is one of the verses which sparks the most controversy amongst people. The reason is because in this verse it is said that men are in charge of women. Now this is not a discrimination towards the women rather it is securing them. Allah (swt) here is making it the responsibility of the man to provide for the females and provide all they need whereas the woman does not need to do the same for the man. Also people do not understand when it is said to strike the women.
Striking them is not for no reason, rather it is only because they have not fulfilled their duty and before striking them one must advise them and then abandon them in their beds. If these two steps do not work then it is that a man is allowed to strike the woman but not on the face and nor leaving a mark. It is more a physical awakening. One should study this verse in a lot more detail before jumping to conclusions about it.
