Jihad

Student of Al Huda
In the verses of this lesson Allah talks about fighting in His way and that it is permitted but with conditions. Muslims should fight for the cause of Allah if there is a need to and if they are being persecuted. However, they should not transgress the limits that are set and overstep them. Allah mentions that you can expel them from where they expel you. Previously, the Muslims had not fought back at all but now they were finally allowed to and had faced many years of persecution.
They were given the command to fight in Allahs way only those who have persecuted them and to expel those who expelled them. This shows the fairness in an Islamic battle that only those who have persecuted you can be killed and not innocent people. The reason that this command was given was because the muslims were being harshly treated and Allah says that fitnah is worse than killing which is why it was prohibited. The Muslims were suffering harshly but did not fight back until the command came to them.
Verse 192 is a very beautiful and eye opening verse.
And if they cease, then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. [Al Baqarah:192]
This verse shows the beauty that Allah is so forgiving and so merciful that there is nothing that can take the place of it. Allah says if the enemy ceases then there is no justification for fighting them anymore and the Muslims should also cease. Allah promises to those who fought the Muslims that he will forgive their actions and show mercy on them for ceasing. Such is the beauty of a real Lord.
