A Change of Qiblah?

Medihah Hussain (Group Ruqayyah)
The verses of this lesson talked about the changing of the direction of prayer for the believers. At one point everyone was facing Jerusalem and then the prophet (pbuh) was told that the Qiblah (prayer direction) had been changed and now everyone must face Makkah. This caused an uproar amongst the believers and the disbelievers.
The foolish among the people will say, “What has turned them away from their qiblah, which they used to face?” Say, To Allāh belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path.” [Al Baqarah:142]
Allah reminds that wherever you turn it is His presence that is there so it makes no difference that the prayer direction has changed. It was not a huge difference to Allah but it was a command so it had to be carried out. Allah guided those who turned towards the new qiblah at the order of the prophet (pbuh). The changing of the direction was nothing but a test for the people to see which of them would follow the commands of the messenger of Allah and which people would turn away and disobey.
