Rites of Recital

Medihah Hussain (Group Ruqayyah)
Those to whom We have given the Book recite it with its true recital. They [are the ones who] believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it is they who are the losers.[Al Baqarah:121]
What does this verse mean to us? Do we really take this verse into account?
Tajweed class is meant to help us in making our recitation better and I see many of us taking it very lightly. It is time to learn our lesson or pass some notes to see what our friend is doing tonight. Yet it is a condition to be a believer that we recite the Qur’an as it is meant to be read. Do we then not understand?
Allah has said those whom the book is given to recite is as is true. This includes three things; the first being the recitation of the verses is correct. This means that we will have to take tajweed class very seriously and understand that these are the words of Allah which is why it is important to read them as they are supposed to read them. The second condition is to understand what is being recited. This means that we will have to take our tafsir and word analysis class seriously so that it helps us when we learn our translation later. The third condition is that we must act upon the verses so we should not just be reading the verses but also taking them into our daily life and seeing how we can put them to practice.
We must remember that this is a condition of being a believer so it is not something to be taken lightly. It is the distinguishing factor in whether one is a believer or not so next time you decide to dose off in class remember this ayah and fear that if you do not give the Qur’an its haqq you will be from the losers.
