Medihah Hussain (Group Ruqayyah)
And they were covered with humiliation and poverty and returned with anger from Allāh [upon them]. That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the signs of Allāh and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing.[Al Baqarah:61]
This verse provides us with the answer to so many of our problems. Bani Israel were continuously disobedient and did not believe nor follow the commands of Allah. As they were heedless and did not want to believe they lost many of the blessings they were given. Allah had favoured them above all the other nations at that time yet they still did not believe.
In verse 61 it is made clear that anytime you disobey Allah you are putting yourself up for some kind of punishment. Bani Israel rejected the food that was sent to them from the heavens for worldly food. This was an obvious downgrade and they did not follow through with the commands of Allah.
Due to this the verse says they were covered with humiliation and poverty. This is a recompense for what they were doing- the punishment matching the crime. They also had the anger of Allah on them showing the severity of their crimes. Allah had sent Bani Israel many prophets to guide them and show them the correct way but they killed them or belied them which also was another reason for this punishment.
What this teaches us is that if we continuously disobey Allah in any manner we are putting ourselves up for the punishment. Many times we wonder why we are struck with a misfortune but what did we do that deserved it? Punishment comes to those who deserve it and Allah wrongs no one. We should take heed from the mistakes of Bani Israel and strive to be obedient and devoted followers of Islam.
Allah has the ability to punish and He can do as He wishes. Although some punishment is given on the world there is also punishment in the hereafter. It is scary to think that humiliation and poverty is the worldly punishment, then what will it be like in the hereafter? We should not put these verses to the back of our mind and act as if we haven’t read them. Now is the time to act so that we earn good for ourselves, so that we are given success in this world and the next.
