A Sealed Heart

Shmaila Nadia Iqbal (Group Sumayyah)
Indeed, those who disbelieve it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them they will not believe. [Al Baqarah:6]
At first during today’s class I was thinking how is it that people do not see the truth when it is bought to them? Islam came to free mankind and to bring back the purpose of life. Allah shows the utter inability the disbelievers have of understanding. They do not have the perception that leads one to see the beauty of the words of Allah. Nor are they able to feel the absolute serenity of the religion Allah has blessed us with.
Allāh has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment. [Al Baqarah:7]
A punishment for the disbelievers due to their denial is that Allah allows them to wander completely into their misguidance. What struck me was the fact that it is natural, when you do not use a certain organ then it loses ability to function. For example when we do not use certain muscles they weaken over time and we are not able to use them. In the same way when we close our eyes and ears to the truth then we are unable to hear and see the truth that may lie before us.
I thought about the punishment that they get for their actions and how fitting it is to their crime. When we really love something we forget about everything else and become so involved in that thing. For example when we are watching a tv show that we love our parents may be talking to us but we do not see or hear anything due to our attention being completely drawn to the screen. It is a fact of life: whatever interests you will take your attention.
I learnt a really big lesson from these verses, it really does make a difference about how you prioritize your life. Whatever you hold dear is what you will go after. What you will go after will have a consequence. Consequences are either good or bad and lead to reward or punishment. The path has been made clear, now it is up to you whether you follow or not.
