Al Qalam V.1-52

A Da’i

Ambreen Haneef (Al Huda Student)
What really struck me from the 29th juz was the character of a Da’i, and the fact that once you get the knowledge then it is a responsibility to convey it. The character of a Dai is very well explained in Surah Qalam, and the surah also tells us how good the character of the Prophet (saw) was. Aisha (ra) was once asked about Prophet (saw) and her reply was “His behavior is the Qur’an”.
So we should mould the commands of Quran in our life, which will make us Humble, as it is the kalam of Allah. Humility is something that attracts many people and can be a good source of Dawah.
One more important thing is to call people to Islam through your actions and not just your speech.

Power Of The Pen

Lubna Iftikhar (Al Huda Student)
Nūn. By the pen and what they inscribe,
You are not, [O Muúammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman. [Al Qalam:1-2]

In the beginning of surah Qalam Allah SWT mentions the importance of the pen. This shows the importance of Ilm (knowledge). Through our Qalam we can do a lot for the deen of Allah (swt). To remain firm on the path of Allah (swt), we all need patience and to ignore all the resistance from people who work against the cause of Allah (swt). Akhirah is only for those who obey Allah (swt) and they are steadfast on their deen.- Lubna Iftikhar

The pen is one of the strongest signs of Allah’s power, thus Allah swears by it in this Surah. Allah uses the pen to make His deen powerful by preserving His words (Quran) throughout the generations. This was the tool that educated the once known illiterate nation of Arabia at the time of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w). I strongly believe that one of the reasons for the fall of this ummah now is because we have forgotten the importance of writing. Most of the Muslim countries literacy rate is very low. If this nation picks up their pen then we might see some success. The success will only occur when the pen is used in the way of deen, as knowledge of the deen cannot be captured without the pen.
It is said that the pen is mightier than the sword and now it is mightier than any technological weapon that exists.

We take it for granted when we come to know the greatness of the ‘pen’. It is the first creation of Allaah. It is that instrument with which our deeds are recorded and we will be asked about them on the Day of Judgement. We also use this beneficial object to put our thoughts on paper and therefore are able to excel in our learning abilities. And last but not least, it was that which helped preserve the Holy Qur’an by putting it leaves of palm, leather, etc by the help of the ‘pen’.
If Allaah gave it so much importance, then how should we behave towards it? We should treat the ‘pen’ with respect by not throwing it around or chewing it by the tip of our teeth and also teach our younger ones to do the same. If we can not respect the utensils with which knowledge is gained, how will we then be able to respect the knowledge itself?
May Allaah give us all the tawfeeq to make use of and take benefit from the knowledge He has bestowed upon us and teach us the etiquettes of acting upon it. Aameen.

What struck me most from this surah is that Allah has created the pen for us to write with and we should use the pen wisely. We think of it as any other thing but don’t use it wisely. We should use the pen for writing Islamic articles, writing tafseer, calligraphy, stories about prophets and much more. The pen was used to preserve so many things one of them is the Qur’an. It was preserved in writing. We should be grateful and use this blessing. If we use this creation wisely, many dealings of man will go well. We should be grateful for this blessing and use it correctly to spread the deen of Allah.

The Surah begins with an oath being taken by the pen. The pen has a long history as it was created before man. The pen is a powerful tool in many ways; it can convey the deen, for example. It was used to inscribe destiny, quran and book of deeds the angels write.
Allah tells us about the story of brothers who had a garden and they did not share their part of profits with the poor, needy and relatives. Allah (swt) took everything away from them in one night. Inshallah we should share whatever we have with the needy, poor and our relatives as it is Allah who gave us the profit and we could not have done it alone.

Character of a Believer

Zia Afsarali (Al Huda Student)
And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer
[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip –
A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,
Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender.
Because he is a possessor of wealth and children [Al Qalam: 10-14]

Allah(swt) took an oath by the pen. A pen is a means of conveying and we should use our pen to write useful things, to convey our message, to promote Deen. Allah(swt) explained about the character of the people, those who disbelieve, those who swear much, slanderer, backbiter, one who walks and spread the rumours, one who stops the good, transgressor, sinner. This Ayah struck me much how much Allah(swt) explained in detail about the character of a person. It made me realize all of the characteristics that we shouldn’t possess.

What struck me most is how Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta’ala) exposed the characteristics of Waleed bin Mughira (Aayat No 8-13). He, being the master of the Arabic language, most eloquent person, the most wealthy and highly respected and honored has been humiliated openly. Also the fact that Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta’ala) is the ‘Aalimul Ghayb, for He knew that Waleed bin Mughira would never accept Islaam, so He revealed these Ayaat and exposed him immediately. The Ayaat have been recited ever since and until the day of resurrection.

Companions of the Garden

Shafaq Ghani
Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning
Without making exception.
So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep. [Al Qalam: 17-19]

When Allah swt provide from His blessings, we mostly react in two ways, either we are grateful for it or we are ungrateful. But most of the time we are ungrateful. We dont even acknowledge the blessing to be from Allah swt let alone gives thanks. When I look at the companions who owned the garden that Allah mentions and their way of thinking toward the blessings they had, I was thinking SubhanAllah they were in such a delusion. They were so absorbed in their properties that in this process they angered Allah swt. They didn’t even imagine that one day they will be deprived of it if they don’t use it to please Allah. So a message in this for us to acknowledge the blessing Allah has given and use it in the right way to obtain benefits from it.
